At a press conference at her Yangon home today Aung San Suu Kyi rattled through eighty questions often answering them in single sentences. That sometimes reflects a mastery of her subject, at other times a near contempt for the question.
Will an NLD government work with the army? Ask me after the election? How is your relationship with Thura U Shwe Mann? Why don’t you ask him? Do you want to be the Speaker of Parlaiment? Had I wanted to answer that question I would have asked it a long time ago.
Her avoidance of a question about the ‘genocide’ of Muslim Rohynga in Rakhine State because she considers describing it thus to be an exaggeration (maybe so) begs another question.
Is Aung San Suu Kyi a racist?
She knew what she was being asked about. She doesn’t want to talk about it. Still. She has talked about the global rise of Islam as something of a threat. Her party removed all Muslims from their candidate list saying it was politically necessary. Three days out from the election she offers little hope of change for Myanamar’s five million Muslims.
What is Aung San Suu Kyi afraid of?
Offending the racist opinions of many of the people who support her? Or offending the racist Ma BA Tha monks who foment those opinions amongst the wider population? They’ve already come out in support of the government party; not much harm in offending them now. Unless you don’t intend undoing their dark deed of creating the four religious laws that potentially justify that charge of genocide.
Is Aung San Suu Kyi a democrat?
An icon of democracy she may have been but since becoming a politician her democratic credentials have been watered down. Her party blocked the introduction of proportional representation remembering better than most, that in their ‘landslide’ win of 1990 while they got 80% of the seats they only got 58% of the vote. (They need more this time to overcome the army’s 25% of the MPs who will side with the USDP). Then today, almost in the same breath as accusing President U Thein Sein of acting unconstitutionally by campaigning in the election, she declared that she would run any NLD government from an unconstitutional position “above the President”, whoever that turns out to be.
Who does Aung San Suu Kyi think she is? General Than Shwe?
