Wonderful Guesthouse in Thazi?

December 2015

There are only a few reasons to overnight in Thazi, it’s not a town with many sights to see. But it’s a smashing place to be if you want to experience small town Myanmar without getting off-track.

Most often travellers are there to connect with the train up to or down from Inle Lake via Kalaw (highly recommended). Sometimes cycle groups come through. It’s a perfect place to stop if you’re travelling by motorcycle.

There are two guesthouses in Thazi. Moonlight and Wonderful. They are only a few doors away from each other on the main street and only about five minutes walk from the station (no need for a horse cart if you’re fit and able).

It’s not the best but Moonlight gets most of the train based trade because it has the advantage of being in Lonely Planet and being the first you come across coming from the station – but that’s where its advantages end.

There’s nothing much wrong with it. It’s a simple, cheap, local style, wooden guesthouse that’s quite tired but well enough kept and clean enough – though it can be a bit noisy. Rooms, mainly without windows, are on the first floor where road traffic is audible in the night and the thin walls mean you’ll be pretty sure to hear fellow guests getting up for the 5am or 7am train. Rooms start from $10.

Only 50m further up the street Wonderful sits right next door to a good – and amazingly cheap – teashop.

Put simply Wonderful is a big step up in style and quality for no more money. The rooms are more modern, but not new. They’ve almost a quite cool retro styling. They all have windows and they are in a building to the rear of the property so they are quieter, especially overnight.

There’s a small seating area on the first floor and a lot of nice furniture around. Rooms and bathrooms are almost spotlessly clean and the English speaking (and Burmese teaching if you ask) family that run it are really friendly and helpful. It has the best wifi I’ve had in ages (good enough to play video).

Wonderful’s rooms are priced at $10 for one person / $15 for two people with shared bathroom and $20 / $25 for the larger ones with private bathroom. That’s very good value.

Even if you’re only staying the one night Wonderful is the best choice. If you’re looking for somewhere to put up for a few days it could be ideal. It’s one of the best budget guesthouses I’ve stayed in in Myanmar. I’m happy to recommend it.

I was not paid or given free accommodation for this review and recommendation. I only offer it because I think travellers are missing out on a bit of a treat by going with the flow and ending up at Moonlight.
