There are not many reasons to come to Aungban on the road and train line between Kalaw and Inle Lake / Taungyii.
It’s an important junction though. Especially if you want to take the train to Loikaw (8am, 11 to 13 hours). Or if you’re heading to Pindaya (1 hour by car).
Or maybe you came for the cabbage. I got a haircut.
There are a few local guesthouses at least one of which I would have been happy to stay at (double = 8,000 Kyat) but none are licensed for foreigners.
There are at least four hotels. Closest to the junction for Pindaya (clock tower) is Viewpoint (081-60506) with OK rooms from $25. There are two more on the road heading out towards Taungyii prices from 50,000 Kyat to $60.
My pick though is the Yangon Garden Guesthouse (081-60034) which sits slightly raised on the hill only a few minutes walk from the station – through the very interesting wholesale fruit and veg market. It’s not on the way into town. Stand on the platform with your back to the main (actually massive) station building and it’s diagonally over to your right, maybe 400m away.
I paid 20,000 Kyat for single use of a twin room. The room was fine (TV). The bathroom (hot water) could have been cleaner but it’s a nice location – in a garden as the name suggests – with views over some of the town.
This is their card.
